This Spring, the Brock Youth Centre hosted 2 entrepreneurship programs for both high school students as well as young adults aged 18-29. Both programs provided competitions for participants to pitch their business idea in front of a panel of local entrepreneurs. Competitors engaged in a series of workshops hosted by BYC staff around North Durham to help build up their business plans. Meet our 2018 entrepreneurship winners!

EDGE 1st Place Winner: Megan Suggitt of Beautiful Minds

Megan created Beautiful Minds to provide mentoring and academic support to youth who are identified with a learning disability or who are struggling academically. Through both mentoring and tutoring support, Beautiful Minds allow youth to see their ability. Megan has ran successful programs thus far with youth both in the Orillia area and in the GTA. Currently, Megan is working towards expanding into North Durham.

EDGE 2nd Place Winner: Katie Sauren of Katie Sauren Photography

Katie Sauren Photography provides marketing solutions for local businesses in North Durham. She offers multiple services, from social media marketing to advertising photography. Her vision is to offer a package that allows all services to be a start to finish experience. She created this business as an addition to her existing Photography business, using skills she developed in school and through work experience to offer a more exclusive marketing experience for local businesses.

High School Competition 1st Place Winner: Grace Brown of Tails Boutiques

Tails Boutiques, created by Grace Brown, offers pet owners tailored and personalized bandanas that are guaranteed to stay on their pet’s collar. These high-end products are available in local shops, farmers’ markets and at craft events in North Durham. Grace continues to expand her product line, and is currently working on the incorporation of a GPS tracking system into the bandanas to allow pet owners to track their pet.

High School Competition 2nd Place Winner: Tyler West of Create 3D

Create3D is a custom 3D printing service utilizing 3D printing technology. All products are completely customizable and can include names, logos, pictures, colours, and more. Each object is either an original design by owner and operator, 16 year-old Tyler West, or an image downloaded from the internet, with custom features added as requested. Tyler is expanding his reach in North Durham via social media and community events.
