Though nominations for this fall’s municipal election don’t officially open until May 1, a pair of former councillors are planning to hit the campaign trail. Longtime local politician Debbie Bath of Sunderland has announced her intention to run for mayor, while Cannington resident Walter Schummer will be looking to reclaim the Ward 3 seat he previously held from 2010 to 2014. As The Brock Voice reported back in February, it looks like the majority of councillors will be seeking re-election this fall, though plans could change before nominations open. Mayor John Grant said that he’s leaning towards seeking a second term in the Township’s top spot. “It is the plan at this time to run for re-election as mayor, though I will make a final decision later in the spring,” he said in a recent interview. After four consecutive terms on council – three as the rep for Ward 5 and another as regional councillor – chances are good that Ted Smith will be seeking re-election as well. Ward 1 Councillor Gord Lodwick said that while he’s interested in continuing to serve on council, he’s unsure which seat he’s going to seek. Ward 2 Councillor Cyndi Schaffer, who was elected to the seat in a by-election back in September 2016, said that her name will be on the ballot this October as well. “I love what I do and I want to continue representing Ward 2,” she said. While Mike Parliament and Therese Miller – the representatives for Ward 3 and Ward 4, respectively – both said they’ve yet to make a decision, Lynn Campbell said she’s set her sights on re-election. “I really enjoy representing my friends and neighbours in Ward 5, which includes my hometown of Sunderland.” The next municipal election is set for October. 22.                           Submitted by The Brock Voice
